The preliminaries consist of a blank (pi1), followed by the Society's order to print (pi2), the title-leaf (pi3), the "Præfatio ad lectorem" (pi4), and two single leaves bearing an "Epistola ..." to the author signed by Henry Oldenburg. These last two leaves were printed as part of the final gathering (leaves O3,4), but the first is signed "A2" to indicate its correct position in the preliminaries. These two leaves may be found misbound before pi4, as in this copy, or in their original position at the end of the volume.

17th-century sprinkled tan calf over paper boards, sewn on four supports; boards decorated with blind fillets forming rectangular frame towards perimeter of boards, with additional vertical fillets towards spine edge; spine with four raised bands, and blind and gilt fillets; gilt roll around board edges; text block edges sprinkled red and blue; tan leather spine label with title; date 1669 in gilt at tail of spine.
