Imprint

Londini, : impensis A[ugustine]. M[athewes]., 1637.

Physical description

[32], 162 p., [1] leaf of plates ; 15 cm (8vo)

Note

"Prolusio ad lectorem" signed: S. W.; attributed to Samuel Ward of Cambridge; also attributed to Samuel Ward of Ipswich.

Note

ESTC states that it is not in fact by Samuel Ward of Ipswich (cf. STC 25030), but attributed instead to Samuel Ward of Cambridge by STC, the British Library General Catalogue and other sources. However, this reattribution can be called into question, with Samuel Ward of Ipswich bequeathing a collection of lodestones in his will and probable confusion between the two being caused by both of them being at Sidney College, Cambridge at the same time (cf. DNB and Alumni Cantabrigenses).

Note

"novVs verVs ..." is a chronogram.

Note

Printer's name from STC.

Note

The engraved frontispiece (plate) has caption: Magnetica magnalia.

Note

A reissue of STC 25027.5, with preliminaries reprinted and a table of contents added. The dedication begins on *1r.

Note

According to ESTC, the preliminary gathering consists of : "leaf [1] blank; {2} t.p.; {3-6] dedication signed *1-4; [7-10] Prolusio signed "B3", "A4" [unsigned, unsigned]; [11-14] table of contents; [15] a leaf printed sideways; [16] first leaf of text. They occur in various orders in different copies".

Suzanne Eward, former Librarian, suggests that this may have belonged to Seth Ward (1617-1689): the partially-surviving inscription at the foot of the title page may be in his handwriting, as well as the correction on leaf A4r.

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Binding

17th-century sprinkled brown sheepskin over paper boards; sewn on three supports; boards decorated with blind fillets forming rectangular frame towards perimeter of boards; smooth spine with gilt fillets; red leather spine label with title; date 1637 in gilt at tail of spine; text block edges sprinkled red; endleaved replaced.
