Inscription in 16th-century hand at head of title page and at head of second leaf ([Maltese cross]2r): "Henry Y hath thys boke".

Provenance

Inscription in early modern hand on title page (partially legible): "Amy ... ".

Provenance

Armorial bookplate of Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715), Bishop of Salisbury 1689-1715) on second leaf (i.e. leaf [Maltese cross]2).

Provenance

Inscription at head of title page: "This booke is Io. Young".

Provenance

Inscription on leaf bound before text (previously an endleaf?): "This book hath been the property of King Henry the Eight, the learned Dean Young, Bishop Burnet, & is now 1760 the property of James West ... ".

Provenance

A copy of an anonymous letter, addressed to the governors of the "County or General New Hospital at Salisbury", dated Nov. 7. 1773, is bound at the beginning of the volume. It gives further information about the book's provenance. It states that, following the sale of books and belongings of James West, the book had several owners, before being purchased by its present owner for "three guineas and a half". The owner, who wished to remain anonymous, offered the book as a charitable donation to the governors of the hospital in Salisbury, to be kept there, or placed in a public library in Salisbury or the "college library in your antient cathedral". A note by John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury, dated Jan 20, 1818, suggests that the anonymous letter-writer was "Joseph Wilcox Esq the only son of Dr Wilcox who was Bishop of Rochester in 1731".

Binding
