Provenance
Inscription on verso of 2nd flyleaf: "This book long in the possession of Miss Jane Chapman, came into the hands of Jane Mary Dampier, her cousin, in February 1868. It may possibly, from the date and the joined hands on the clasps, and the device on the centre medallion of the cover, have been a wedding present to our ancestor, Lord Falkland." However, the most likely Lord Falkland (Lucius Cary, 2nd viscount Falkland, 1610-43) was married to Letitia Morison in 1630 (their eldest son was baptised on July 1632), so this volume, which includes 2 items dated 1633, is unlikely to relate to that marriage. No other appropriate members of the Cary/Falkland or Dampier families have been traced.
Provenance
Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”
Binding
17th-century black goatskin; sewn on five supports. Boards decorated with gilt fillets forming three concentric rectangular frames, with gilt stamps. Silver centre-piece, clasp-plates and corner-pieces on upper and lower boards (actual clasps missing). Centre-pieces have design of clasped hands below a heart held by two angels below a coronet; clasps have a design of a piping cherub beside a skull, within a decorative band with angels; corner-pieces depict the virtues. Spine with five raised bands, and gilt tooling in the compartments incorporating triangular designs flanking central flowers. Gilt roll around board edges and on turn-ins; text block edges gilded; marbled endleaves. Now in archival card box.
