Provenance
Identified by David Selwyn as having belonged to Edmund Guest (1514?-1577).
Provenance
Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century, large format) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”
Binding
Early 16th-century brown calf over wooden boards; repaired in 20th century; sewn on three supports; blind fillets forming two rectangular frames on boards, the inner frame is filled with fillets in diaper design with "pineapple" stamps in the lozenges (identified by Selwyn as Oldham ornament K.(4) 1017 (Gray=stamp 2)); spine (repaired) with three raised bands and "Hugo de Sancto Caro Postilla in gilt (20th-century); title in ink on fore-edge; pressmark R42 in ink on fore-edge; remains of two clasps at fore-edge; parchment manuscript waste (identified by Selwyn as fragments from a 12th- or 13th-century manuscript, probably English, of Ovid's Ars Amatoria) used as pastedowns, now free; 20th-century paper pastedowns. Harry Bailey states that this was bound by Nicholas Spierinck, but this needs more invenstigation.
Copy-specific note
Marginal notes in ink on leaf 138r-v (v.1); according to David Selwyn, these are not in Edmund Guest's hand.
