Provenance
Identified by David Selwyn as having belonged to Edmund Guest (1514?-1577), with pressmark N32 and annotations. There is evidence of previous ownership.
Provenance
Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”
Binding
Very late 15th- or early 16th-century English dark brown calf over wooden boards; rebacked 1918; blind fillets forming rectangular frame on boards, with lines intersecting some way in from the corners, and with individual blind stamps, and central diaper pattern with pineapple stamps; remains of two clasps at fore-edge; pressmark N32 and title (very faint) in ink on fore-edge; printed waste used as pastedowns (2 leaves from John Gower, Confessio amantis (Westminster: William Caxton, 1483); ISTC ig00329000), which have been removed and are now catalogued separately.
Copy-specific note
The remaining upper endleaf, leaf a1, and verso of final leaf are filled with annotations in a variety of very late 15th- or early 16th-century hands. The recto of the upper endleaf has two annotations in Latin, below which is the notation of twenty Basse Dances, which continues on the verso. Annotations in Edmund Guest's hand overwrites much of what is on the recto. Leaf A1r has a note in Latin, partially overwritten by Guest. The verso of the final leaf (T8v) has notes in at least four hands.
Copy-specific note
The Basse Dance notation on the upper endleaf is discussed and transcribed in David Wilson, The Basse Dance handbook (Hillsdale, NY: Pendragon Press, 2012), pages 113-122.
Copy-specific note
Leaf A1 has "Catholicon" printed on it.
