David G. Selwyn, Edmund Geste and his books (London, 2017), F5

Provenance

Inscription at head of title page: "Bransbei Gest". This is John Brandisby (died 1549) who bequeathed the book to his nephew Edmund Guest (1514?-1577), bishop of Salisbury 1571-1577. See David G. Selwyn, Edmund Geste and his books (London, 2017).

Binding

19th-century tan half calf; boards covered with marbled paper; blind rolls on boards (where the calf meets the paper); spine with 4 flat raised bands, blind rolls and stamps, and gilt fillets; drab endleaves; "Ficini Epistolæ" and "1494" stamped in gilt on spine.

Copy-specific note

There are a few manuscript notes in 16th-century hands: on the title page, below the device/vignette, is "auis ignota" (presumably referring to the bird in the device above); further unclear notes are on leaves Aa6r, q1r, &2r, and [con]10v.
