Provenance

Vol 1, containing Part 1 and Inventorium: Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Provenance

(Vols. 2-3): Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.” pasted over Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate with inscription “This book belongs to the library of the Cathedral Church of New Sarum. James Evans, D. D. Librarian. 1817.”

Provenance

Vol. 3 (and possibly vols. 1-2) may have been owned by Edmund Guest; traces of a former pressmark in ink (very similar to the pressmarks on Guest's other books) can be seen on the fore-edge, possibly "P10" [?]. Any possible pressmarks on the fore-edges of vols. 1-2 have been obscured by later red staining.

Binding

Vols. 1-2: 19th-century dark brown calf over paper boards; blind fillets and rolls forming two concentric rectangular frames on boards, with fillets and rolls joining them at the corners; spine with four flat raised bands, and gilt fillets; blind roll around board edges; blind roll on turn-ins; text block edges stained red; drab endleaves; "Inventor Opera Gersonis" and "1494" in gilt on spine of vol. 1, and "Opera Johannis de Gerson" and "1494" in gilt on spine of vol. 2.

Binding

Vol. 3: 19th-century tan half-sheepskin over paper boards; boards covered with marbled paper; blind tooling on boards (where the leather and paper meet); spine with six raised bands, blind rolls and stamps; and gilt rolls; buff endleaves; possible traces of former pressmark in ink on fore-edge.

Copy-specific note

Manuscript annotations in ink, mostly underlining and reading marks, and occasional marginal notes, in a late 15th-/early 16th-century hand (not Edmund Guest's hand).

Copy-specific note

Imperfect: Part 1 is wanting leaf gg8 (final blank leaf); part 2 is wanting leaf nN8 (final blank leaf); part 3 is wanting leaves aa1 (title leaf) and DD8 (final blank leaf).
