Provenance

There is an inscription (in Spanish?) at the foot of leaf Y4r, which has been crossed out and is thus hard to decipher: " ... isto lib[r]o s[...] augustin[us] dla torre ... toletano sti. p. n. ... s[anct]i augustinus de la torre". Two similar inscriptions, also crossed out and difficult to decipher, but with the words Sancto Augustino visible, are on the title page of the first item in the volume: "Este libro p[er]tenece a ... s[anct]]to augustin Degala ...". , and on the upper endleaf: "Pertenece a clim[?] Leon A[...] de s[anct]i Augustin de gola".

Provenance

Inscription in 17th-century hand on upper endleaf: "Liber Georgij Wotton ex dono Thomæ Colles".

Provenance

There are two further inscriptions on the title page of the first item in this volume. One reads "Alcabo desti libro dice q. p[er]tenece a toledo"; the other is less clear: "... fray luys de Valdi...".

Provenance

The names "George" and "John Clynton" are written in 17th-century hands on the verso of the initial leaf of the first item in the volume.

Provenance

"Gulielmus Connnor ord conuentu Corcagiensis" is inscribed iin a 17th-century at the foot of the second leaf of the first item in the volume.

Provenance

Label on inside of upper board: "This book was presented to Salisbury Cathedral Library in memory of the Reverend Prebendary Hancock, Treasurer of Wells Cathedral. It was handed to Canon Quirk during the great war of 1939-1945 when he was in search of a place of safety for Sarum Cathedral treasures. R. Quirk 30.VIII.1945.".

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century, large format) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”

Binding

Early 16th-century, Continental, reddish-brown leather over pasteboards (leaves of parchment and paper manuscript waste clearly visible); sewn on three supports; blind fillets forming rectangular frame towards perimeter of boards, with inner frame of fillets with crossing corners, filled with vertical, horizontal, and diagonal blind fillets; fore-edge flap from lower board extending onto upper board, with evidence of fastenings; spine with three raised bands and horizontal blind fillets; parchment manuscript waste used as spine lining.
