Provenance

Identified by David Selwyn as having belonged to Edmund Guest (1514?-1577), with pressmark and extensive annotations.

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Binding

19th-century quarter tan leather; boards covered with parchment; sewn on three supports; blind tooling on boards (where the leather meets the parchment); blind and gilt tooling on spine; drab endleaves; "Paraldi Episcopi Lugdunensis Summarium 1497" lettered in gilt on spine; title and pressmark N45 [?] in ink on fore-edge.

Copy-specific note

There are extensive annotations in ink in the hand of Edmund Guest. The pressmark N45[?], characteristic of books from Guest, is written in ink on the fore-edge. A title is also written on the fore-edge in ink; this hand does not resemble that of the titles usually found on Guest's books, and Selwyn suggests that it is from a previous owner.

Copy-specific note

The tail and fore-edge margins of the leaves of gatherings R and S are damaged, but with no loss of text.
