Uniform title

Glees, voices (4). Selections

Title

Glee..

Imprint

[S.l.] : [s.n.], [before 1797]

Physical description

1 score (7, [1] p.) ; 34 cm

Note

Title page wanting; title from caption on page 1.

Note

For 4 voices (either ATTB or TrATB) chiefly unaccompanied; "Select parts of Gray's Elegy" has figured bass, unrealized.

Note

The texts of the 4 glees printed on the present 7 pages were set as glees for four voices by John Marsh (1752-1828) as he himself recorded in his journal. The same 4 are said to have been published as a set by John Bland in 1787; they were published as: Two serious and two cheerful glees, op. 10; see: The John Marsh journals ... / edited ... by Brian Robins, vol. 1 (Pendragon Press, 1998), pages 233, 267, 330, 344, 414, 773. Perhaps the present 7 pages are an instance of that publication of 1787.

Note

"I [John Marsh] set the glee of 'Who was the Man kiss'd Pat last night?' (the words of which were lately given me by Mr Williams of Romsey) for 4 voices."--The John Marsh journals ... / edited ... by Brian Robins, vol. 1, page 233.

Note

It is likely that 'Mr Williams of Romsey' is the Rev. Daniel Williams (ca. 1748-1833) who was curate of Romsey from 1774 and, from 1807, Vicar of Romsey until his death; he succeeded John Woodburn as Vicar on the death of the latter. In his Journals, John Marsh recounts that "our firstborn was christened by Mr Williams after my own name" on 4th January, 1776; see: The John Marsh journals ... / edited ... by Brian Robins, vol. 1, page 135.

Note

Not listed in ESTC or RISM.
