Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Binding

20th-century (February, 1916) white cloth; leather spine title label: "Bonaventvra in IIII. Sentent.". A fragment of the original leather cover is pasted to upper pastedown. The cover appears to date from the late 15th or early 16th century. It is brown sheepskin, blind tooled with fillets forming at least two rectangular frames, and with blind stamps of roses and fleur-de-lys, in what was probably an all-over pattern.

Copy-specific note

On the upper pastedown is a note written by Christopher Wordsworth, librarian: "I found this worm-eaten fragment lying in the press ZC1. It runs from sig. p3- z6; A-P8; S1-5. Of the original binding nothing remained excepting a worm eaten board, with a fragment of the leather cover which I have pasted - on to this canvas cover. 14 Feb. 1916. Chr. Wordsworth Librarian".

Copy-specific note

Imperfect: this is a fragment of book 4, consisting only of gatherings p (wanting p1, p2), q-z, A-E, F (wanting F2), G-P, S (wanting S6). The leaves of gathering z are bound out of order: z1, z3, z2, z5, z4, z6.

Copy-specific note

Decoration supplied in blue and red: 3-, 4-, and 5-line initials, some with slight extensions into the left margin, and paragraph marks.
