Provenance
Identified by David Selwyn as having belonged to Edmund Guest (1514?-1577), with pressmark S19.
Binding
19th-century tan calf over paper boards, with blind roll towards perimeter of boards; spine with three raised bands and blind rolls; blind roll around board edges; blind roll on turn-ins. Parts of the original late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century tan calf covers are overlaid on the boards. These are decorated with three blind rolls in a concentric all-over pattern. David Selwyn suggests that the binding is French, and has identified the rolls as pl. 58 ENc4 or Enc2(?); RC13 from Denise Gid, Catalogue des reliures françaises estampées à froid, XVe-XVIe siècle de la Bibliothèque Mazarine (Paris, 1984). The fore-edge has a title in ink, which may pre-date Guest's ownership, and a pressmark characteristic of Guest's books. Two leaves of parchment manuscript waste, which were the original pastedowns, have been retained in the re-bound volume; they have been identified by David Selwyn as two leaves from a thirteenth-century English breviary, with musical notation and decorated initials.
