Two distinct hands are discernible in the inscription; the first, presumably that of author: "An Exercise for the Degree of a Doctor in Music in Oxford."; the second, apparently that of Sir Henry Rowley Bishop: "Approved by me, Henry R Bishop; Knt.. Prof. Mus. Oxon. April 14 1852."
