Bequeathed to the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by Brigadier Tim Hackworth, military knight of Windsor and a direct descendant of Joseph Corfe (1740-1820) and Arthur Thomas Corfe (1773-1863); subsequently donated by the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle to Salisbury Cathedral Library, with the agreement of the family of the late Brigadier Hackworth.

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century, reprinted 2019) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”

Binding

19th-century dark blue quarter sheepskin; boards covered with marbled paper.

Copy-specific note

Dynamic markings in pencil on pages 1-4: "pia[no]", "for[te]", "soft". Dynamics and correcting accidentals entered in pencil; see: pages 13 and 15 respectively. Inscriptions in pencil on page 18: "Collect ending ... to subdue ...", "... G". Markings in pencil on page 20. Performance markings entered in pencil or in ink into the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis: "& rather slower" (page 25), "Full" (page 26), "Choir organ", "Swell" (page 30).

Copy-specific note

The 'Dirge' (page 40) ends, apparently oddly, with semibreve D followed by semibreve E-flat; this is also noted in a paper: "The music at Nelson's funeral in St Paul's Cathedral" in The musical times, vol. 46, no. 752 (October 1, 1905) where it is further noted on page 648 that, "D and E flat ... evidently led into the next vocal number of the burial service - 'Man that is born of woman,' by Dr. Croft." This appears to explain the two, pencilled inscriptions "E [flat]" at the start of 'Man that is born of a woman' on page 13 of the present item.

Copy-specific note

At head of upper endleaf: 3/10.

Copy-specific note
