Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Binding

16th-century dark brown calf over wooden boards, with bevels in the centre of the head-, fore-, and tail-edges of the boards , probably German or Netherlandish; sewn on four double supports; repaired 1942. The boards are decorated with blind fillets forming a rectangular frame towards perimeter of boards, within which is a frame formed by a roll with images of Juno, Venus, Pallas Athena, and Paris, who are named. Within this are two further frames of blind fillets, with the space between filled with blind stamps. The spine has four raised bands and blind horizontal fillets. There are blind fillets on the turn-ins. There are the remains of two metal clasps at the fore-edge, running from lower to upper board. There are later endleaves, and a note on the upper pastedown: "Binding Repaired, Febr. 1942". Any previous endleaves are absent.
