Printed book label (approximately 1635) on upper pastedown, with inscription: "Franciscus D.G. Bamberg. & Herbip. Episcopus, Franconiæ dux, hunc cum alijs fere quattuor librorum millibus; plerośq[ue] à Suecis bello raptos, à Caesar. milite iterum ereptos, & ex ære S.C. redemtos, munificentissimè clementissiméque donabat Collegij Societatis Iesu Herbip. bibliothecæ verus illius restaurator. Deus æternùm benefaciat!" [i.e. one of c. 4000 books seized by the Swedes [at the siege of Würzburg in 1632], recovered by the Imperial army and bought back by Francis, bishop of Bamberg and Würzburg and prince-bishop of Franconia [Franz von Hatzfeld, 1596-1642], who generously gave them to the Jesuit college in Würzburg, so becoming ”the true restorer of that library”].

16th-century German pigskin binding sewn on three bands over bevelled oak boards; spine and half of each board in blind-tooled pigskin in roll design; remainder of boards uncovered, with blind tooling in a lozenge pattern directly onto the oak boards. Two metal and leather clasps at fore-edge, reaching from back board; lower clasp defective.
