Identified by David Selwyn as having belonged to Edmund Guest (1514?-1577), with early fore-edge titles and pressmark (F42 [?]) and marginal annotations.
Provenance
Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”
Binding
16th-century dark brown calf over paper boards (boards made from printed waste); sewn on five tanned leather supports; boards decorated with blind fillets forming a rectangular frame towards perimeter of boards, with a blind stamp and the initials EG (for Edmund Guest) at centre, and the same blind stamp at the inner corners; spine with five raised bands, blind fillets, and blind hatching at tail (head of spine now missing); manuscript waste used as pastedowns (now loose), identified by David Selwyn as two leaves from a (probably English) 14th-century alphabetical dictionary; evidence of two pairs of leather ties at fore-edge; titles and pressmark F42 [?] in ink on fore-edge.
