Note

Robert Birchall, music publisher of New Bond Street, died in December 1819. His successors, Christopher Lonsdale (1795-1877) and Richard Mills (1798-1870), worked in partnership until 29 October, 1834 whereafter they traded separately. C. Lonsdale announced "the removal of his interest in the Stock of the late Firm to No. 26 Old Bond-street" in advertisements printed in December 1834; see, for example, The Satirist and the Censor of the Time, December 7, 1834, page [383]. The British Book Trade Index states that Christopher Lonsdale traded at 26 Old Bond Street from 1839 until 1846. It appears that C. Lonsdale was, after October 1834, selling stock inherited from Robert Birchall, stock that had been printed before 1820.

Note

Libretto by Newburgh Hamilton, adapted from that of John Dryden.

Provenance

Inscription, in ink, at head of the first page: "J. E. Cother" [Jane Elizabeth Cother]. Jane Elizabeth Cother (ca. 1818-1899) married Charles William Corfe (1814-1883) on 7th July, 1842. Following C. W. Corfe's death, she married George Thomas Miles on 22nd January, 1885. As Jane Elizabeth Miles, she died on 29th April, 1899, aged 81.

Inscription, in pencil, on upper endleaf: "Corfe Oxon".

Provenance

Bequeathed to the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by Brigadier Tim Hackworth, military knight of Windsor and a direct descendant of Joseph Corfe (1740-1820) and Arthur Thomas Corfe (1773-1863); subsequently donated by the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle to Salisbury Cathedral Library, with the agreement of the family of the late Brigadier Hackworth.
