The Regent's Harmonic Institution "for the advancement of the science of music" commenced its activities in February 1819. By June 1819, the Institution was already advertising an extensive range of publications, including "new correct editions of the works of Handel, Haydn" etc. (see, for example, The Morning Herald, June 18, 1819, page [1]). Following the accession of the Prince Regent, as George IV, to the throne on 29th January, 1820, the Institution became the Royal Harmonic Institution, although the term 'Regent's Harmonic Institution' continued in use, with declining frequency, until the middle of 1823.

Note

William Price Aylward (ca. 1811-1890), musician and music seller of Salisbury, was in business as a music seller by 19th June, 1834, as is recorded at the time of the baptism of his first child. His business was located at premises on New Canal by or before 1839; see: Robson's Directory for that year.

Inscription, in ink, at head of page 1: "Jane E. Cother" [Jane Elizabeth Cother]. Jane Elizabeth Cother (ca. 1818-1899) married Charles William Corfe (1814-1883) on 7th July, 1842. Following C. W. Corfe's death, she married George Thomas Miles on 22nd January, 1885. As Jane Elizabeth Miles, she died on 29th April, 1899, aged 81.

Bequeathed to the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by Brigadier Tim Hackworth, military knight of Windsor and a direct descendant of Joseph Corfe (1740-1820) and Arthur Thomas Corfe (1773-1863); subsequently donated by the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle to Salisbury Cathedral Library, with the agreement of the family of the late Brigadier Hackworth.
