Provenance

Inscription, in ink, on upper pastedown: "C. W. Corfe from William H Pearson March 1835." Hugh Nicholas Pearson was Dean of Salisbury from 1823 until 1846; it is likely that "William H Pearson" is identical with Dean Pearson's son, William Henley Pearson. William Henley Pearson graduated B.A. at Christ Church, Oxford in 1835. William Henley Pearson was born in 1813; in 1848 he married Martha Jervis. As from 22nd May, 1865, he and his wife took the surname Jervis, by Royal licence, in compliance with a proviso contained in the last will and testament of Admiral of the Fleet John Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent (see: The London Gazette, May 30, 1865, pages 2806-2807). As William Henley Jervis, William Henley Pearson died on 27th January, 1883, aged 69.

Provenance

Bequeathed to the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by Brigadier Tim Hackworth, military knight of Windsor and a direct descendant of Joseph Corfe (1740-1820) and Arthur Thomas Corfe (1773-1863); subsequently donated by the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle to Salisbury Cathedral Library, with the agreement of the family of the late Brigadier Hackworth.

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century, reprinted 2019) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”

Binding

19th-century; quarter brown leather, with boards covered with paste paper. Title tooled in gilt on spine: "Weelkes Madrigals 1600".

Copy-specific note

The Alto and Tenore partbooks have sustained some damage, but most of the musical text is intact.

Copy-specific note

At head of the alto part of 'When Thoralis delights' (madrigal no. II.), a fragment of an inscription, in ink, partly lost, the page having been trimmed.
