The Highbury Philharmonic Society, conducted by J. F. Bridge, included the present work in a concert given on 12th December 1881; in the Islington Gazette, December 15, 1881 it was reported, on page [3], that "a madrigal, 'A Canticle to Apollo' composed by the society's conductor, [was] ... performed for the first time".
