Author

Corfe, Leonard B. L. (Leonard Basil Loder), 1876-1932

Title

The St. George's chorus [music manuscript] / written & composed by Leonard B. L. Corfe.

Imprint

[S.l.] : [s.n.], [1902]

Physical description

3 parts of music (2 copies of the part for violin 1, 1 copy of the part for violin 2) ; 31 cm

Note

Three folded leaves of 12-stave manuscript paper; one leaf for each part of music.

Note

These manuscript parts have been written in a fine and clear hand.

Note

A work in G major marked, "All[egr]o con spirito alla marcia".

Note

Instrumental cues written into the parts: bass, trumpets, harp; the part for violin 1 includes a chorus cue with these words, "under every tree".

Note

First performed by the Choral Society of St. Augustine's, Fulham and the Band of the Scots Guards at a Festival of the Society of St. George given on St. George's Day, 23rd April, 1902 at the Hotel Cecil, London; see, for example, The Hereford Times, April 26, 1902, page 15. The performance was given in anticipation of a peace treaty being signed so as to bring an end to the South African War (the 'Boer War').

Note

The present work, consisting as it does of violin parts, implies an instrumentation other than that which would have been used by the Scots Guards; it is recorded that the work was performed in other circumstances, e.g. the obituary notice for L. B. L. Corfe notes that the work "was performed first at the St. George's dinner and afterwards at the Albert Hall"; see: Kent & Sussex Courier, July 22, 1932, page 10.

Note

The text, written by the composer, begins: "Arise, Britannia's sons! arise In harmony, and sing A song of love and loyalty To England and her King"; see, for example, The Hereford Times, April 26, 1902, page 15.
