Author
Corfe, C. J. (Charles John), 1843-1921
Title
Hymns [music manuscript]. Book 4.
Imprint
[S.l.] : [s.n.], [between 1908 and 1921]
Physical description
1 manuscript score (23, [1] p.) ; 30 cm
Note
24 pages of 12-stave manuscript paper; a collection of 42 hymn tunes occupies 23 of those pages.
Note
Apparently the work of a single hand, the music is written using black ink; underlining of titles, etc. has been added in red ink.
Note
Each one of the hymn tunes herein preserved appears to be an otherwise unknown composition; it appears that this is a unique collection of hymn tunes, they being, perhaps, the compositions of the scribe. Each hymn tune is assigned to a published hymn text, as recorded in the list of contents; the hymn tunes are arranged (almost) alphabetically by incipit of hymn text.
Note
The inscriptions: "Book 4" (page 1), "Also in Book 2 Page 11" (foot of page 10), "See setting in[?] 'Index Vol' " (page 18), suggest that this volume of hymns is one of a set.
Note
The numbering of the hymns (as listed in the contents) corresponds with the numbers as in: Hymns Ancient and Modern / ed. W. H. Monk (1889); The English Hymnal (1906); and, The Oxford Hymn Book (1908).

Provenance
"One of [Charles John] Corfe's recreations consisted in musical composition. His brother Robert [Robert Philip Cother Corfe] possesses six volumes of his hymn tunes and other musical efforts, and the hymn tunes alone number 240, ... . He often used to print his tunes as Christmas cards, ..." quoted from Chapter VI of: Charles John Corfe : naval chaplain, bishop / by H. H. (Henry Hutchinson) Montgomery, 1847-1932 (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, 1927); the reference to Christmas cards may throw light on the pencilled inscription: "Printed on Card?" found at the start of 'For ever with the Lord' on page 5.
