At head of page [1]: Bass. Programme of the opening of the [Crystal] Palace, on Saturday, June 10 [1854]; at foot of page [1]: Conductor, Mr. Costa. The orchestral arrangements superintended by the Committee of the Sacred Harmonic Society. [On page [1]: instructions for the conduct of the opening ceremony.]

On page [2]: Bass [includes cues for sym[phony] and for solo soprano 1o.]. God save the Queen. Sacred Harmonic Society Exeter Hall. Arranged for the opening of the Crystal Palace, 10 June, 1854, by M. Costa. [This arrangement has 3 verses of which the 1st and 3rd are in B-flat major, the 2nd in F major.]

Note

On page [3]: Bass. Old 100th psalm. [Set in A major; text begins] All people that on earth do dwell. [There are 4 verses. In the 3rd verse the bass part has the melody of the Old Hundredth. The 4th verse is marked] Doxology. [This metrical psalm was sung after the Royal Procession around the Crystal Palace had taken place.]

Note

On pages [4] and [5]: Bass. No. 44. Chorus. "Hallelujah!" [Stamped in red ink at "the kingdom of this world"] Slower. [Stamped in red ink at "the Kingdom of our Lord"] Tempo 1mo. [As these pages are numbered] 15 [and] 16, [and as they have the plate identifier] Handel's "Messiah" (Novello's Edition), [it appears that they are offprints from a previously published set of parts. This was sung after the Archbishop of Canterbury had given the blessing, whereafter] Her Majesty [declared] the Crystal Palace opened.

Note

On page [6]: God save the Queen arranged expressly for the Sacred Harmonic Society, Exeter Hall by M. Costa. November 1848. [This is a choral score for] soprano, alto, tenor, bass [consisting of verse 2 in F major, verse 3 in B-flat major; verse 1, judging by the cue preceding the choral score, was sung by a solo soprano. This 2nd rendition of 'God save the Queen' was sung after the Queen had declared] the Crystal Palace opened. [By the printed date on page [6], it will be seen that Michael Costa was using a previously made arrangement.]

Bequeathed to the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by Brigadier Tim Hackworth, military knight of Windsor and a direct descendant of Joseph Corfe (1740-1820) and Arthur Thomas Corfe (1773-1863); subsequently donated by the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle to Salisbury Cathedral Library, with the agreement of the family of the late Brigadier Hackworth.
