Note
Sinfonie. par L. v. Beethoven. op.125.--Caption, page [1].
Note
There are no metronome marks in this score; this fact, taken together with the print's plate number and publisher, suggest that this is an early print of this work, perhaps a first edition, albeit rebound and lacking its original covers and list of subscribers.
Note
Title page lithographed; music engraved. Title page includes armorial crest.
Note
Stamped at foot of title page: "R. Cocks & Co. music sellers London."
Note
The publisher, Robert Cocks, died, aged 89, on 7th April, 1887 at Wilby House, Ladbroke Terrace, Notting Hill, London. According to the notice of his death published in The St. James's Gazette, April 14, 1887, page 11, "he started in business as a music publisher in Princes-street, Hanover-square, as far back as the year 1823. Except that the establishment was moved to New Burlington-street about 1844, the business has been continued ever since ... ."
Note
Plate no.: 2322; the plate number, 2322, corrected from 2321 on some of the pages (e.g. pages 16-23, 115-122).
Language
Sung German words.
Provenance
Inscription, in ink, on first upper endleaf: "C. W. Corfe Oxon."; inscription, in pencil, at head of title page: "C. W. Corfe, Close, July [..?]"; from the inscription "Close" [i.e. The Close, Salisbury] we may infer that C. W. Corfe was in possession of this score prior to his removal to Oxford at the end of 1846; the date "July [..?]" is partially lost, the page having been trimmed.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle by Brigadier Tim Hackworth, military knight of Windsor and a direct descendant of Joseph Corfe (1740-1820) and Arthur Thomas Corfe (1773-1863); subsequently donated by the Archives of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle to Salisbury Cathedral Library, with the agreement of the family of the late Brigadier Hackworth.
Provenance
Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century, reprinted 2019) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”
Binding
19th-century half brown calf; boards covered with dark blue moire cloth; gilt rolls on boards; smooth spine with gilt rolls and stamps; black leather spine label with title "Beethoven's Choral Symphony"; now in archival box.
Copy-specific note
Many pages discoloured, apparently by water or damp.
Copy-specific note
Black/grey strokes appear quite frequently across a number of pages but the printed music is still clear to the eye.
Copy-specific note
On page 95: 4 'X' marks, in pencil, above the timpani part.
Copy-specific note
At head of 1st upper endleaf: 3/5.
