Physical description
[8], 139, [1]; [8], 163, [1]; [4], 65, [3]; 68, [4] p. : ill. ; 31 cm (fol.)
Note
Editio princeps, edited by Thomas Venatorius (originally Thomas Gechauff); Latin version by Jacobus Cremonensis, as corrected by Joannes Regiomontanus.
Note
Some copies contain an additional printed leaf before [alpha]1 which appears to have been printed in Oxford, according to a MS note in Bodleian Library copy Auct. K 3.6, during the second part of the 18th century. This is the prologue to Archimēdous peri sphairas kai kylindrou, which was lacking in the manuscript on which Venatorius based his edition. This prologue appears to have been copied from a different manuscript version and printed at a later date than the present edition.
Note
First part of title transliterated from Greek characters.
Note
The Latin version of Archimedes (which follows the Greek original) also has special title page: "Archimedis Syracusani philosophi ac geometrae excellentissimi Opera, quae quidem extant omnia, Latinitate iam olim donata, nuncq́ue primum in lucem edita" and begins new pagination and signatures.
Note
Eutocius's Commentaries have separate dated title page: "[Eutokiou Askalonitou eis ta Archimēdous peri sphairas kai kylindrou, kai ta alla, hypomnēmata]. = Eutocii Ascalonitae in Archimedis libros de sphaera et cylindro, atq[ue] alios quosdam, commentaria, nunc primum & Græce & Latine in lucem edita" and begin new pagination and signatures. The Latin translation of the Commentaries, which follows the Greek original, has caption title "Commentarii Eutocii Ascalonitae in primum Archimedis De spæra & cylindro", and separate pagination and signatures.
Note
Colophon (leaf Ii3r): "Basileae, per Ioannem Heruagium, anno ab orbe redempto, M.D.XLIIII. mense Martio.".

Provenance
Inscription on title page: "Ih Grandisonij pretiu[m] xxs. 20 Martij 1625".
Provenance
May have belonged to Seth Ward (1617-1689); it looks as though one of his distinctive shelfmarks is written on the upper pastedown, on the side pasted to the board.
Provenance
Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.” pasted over Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate with inscription “This book belongs to the library of the Cathedral Church of New Sarum. James Evans, D. D. Librarian. 1817.”
Binding
17th-century (possibly earlier?) dark brown calf over paper boards; sewn on five supports; boards decorated with blind fillets forming rectangular frame towards perimeter of boards; parchment manuscript waste used as spine lining; evidence of chain-plate on lower board at fore-edge. Some evidence of repair?
Copy-specific note
Does not contain the additional printed leaf before leaf [alpha]1.
Copy-specific note
Annotation on lower free endleaf about Marmaduke Nielson, possibly Captain Marmaduke Neilson who claimed to have found an astronomical method of finding longitude at sea.
