He was born in Salisbury 1740 and was a chorister there under Doctor Stephens then organist[.] He was appointed Gent. of the Chapel Royal in 1782 [sic, i.e. 1783], and organist of Salisbury in 1792, which place resigned in 1804 in favour of his son Arthur Thomas, and died in 1820. He was much noticed by the Malmesbury family. His Beauties of Purcell were dedicated to Miss Susan Beckford, daughter of Mr Beckford of Fonthill Abbey, afterwards Duchess of Hamilton." Added below this inscription, in red ink and in the hand of Edward Charles Corfe, the inscription: "Joseph Corfe, (the second) was son of Joseph Corfe (born 1704), who was a brother of the James Corfe above named, otherwise thiis notice is correct. E. C. Corfe, Precentor of Truro, 1904-1930." A further inscription, in black ink, states that "The above note is in the handwriting of the late Mr. T. Oliphant."
