Provenance

Bookplate on upper pastedown: "E libris Jvliani Marshall".

Provenance

On third upper endleaf of this bound collection, a (somewhat inaccurate) biographical inscription, in ink: "Joseph Corfe was probably the son (correction added in red ink: "no, - nephew") of James Corfe who published (added in red ink: "about 1740") a set of 12 songs advertised in the Daily Advertiser 27 Sept 1843 [sic, i.e. 1743]. He was born in Salisbury 1740 and was a chorister there under Doctor Stephens then organist[.] He was appointed Gent. of the Chapel Royal in 1782 [sic, i.e. 1783], and organist of Salisbury in 1792, which place resigned in 1804 in favour of his son Arthur Thomas, and died in 1820. He was much noticed by the Malmesbury family. His Beauties of Purcell were dedicated to Miss Susan Beckford, daughter of Mr Beckford of Fonthill Abbey, afterwards Duchess of Hamilton." Added below this inscription, in red ink and in the hand of Edward Charles Corfe, the inscription: "Joseph Corfe, (the second) was son of Joseph Corfe (born 1704), who was a brother of the James Corfe above named, otherwise thiis notice is correct. E. C. Corfe, Precentor of Truro, 1904-1930." A further inscription, in black ink, states that "The above note is in the handwriting of the late Mr. T. Oliphant."

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century, reprinted 2019) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”

Binding

19th-century half tan sheepskin; boards covered with textured red cloth (not "half red morocco" as in the bookseller's advertisement); gilt fillets on boards; spine with five raised bands and gilt tooling; head-edge of text block gilded; marbled endleaves; binder’s stamp on verso of marbled endleaf: “Bound by F. Bedford”.

Copy-specific note

Bound with: Twelve glees [set 1], and, Twelve glees [set 2]. Several inscriptions, in pencil, on the upper endleaves relate to the fact that 3 sets of glees are here bound in one volume: "3 vols in 1", "Glees. Corfe Glees 3 Sets 1 [?]", "Corfe's Glees, 3 books in 1".

Copy-specific note

Includes 3 cuttings (2 pasted onto upper endleaves, 1 loose between them), apparently taken from book sale catalogues; no. 136 (loosely inserted) appears to be an accurate description of the present volume; the other two are inaccurate, this volume lacking both the list of subscribers and the "pretty vignette": "136 Corfe ... Twelve [24] glees .... Two books. Preston, ... . A third set of Twelve glees ... ... . 3 vols. in 1, oblong folio, the music engraved throughout, half red morocco, top edges gilt, by Bedford, from the Julian Marshall collection, with a note on Corfe in T. Oliphant's autograph 1l. 10s."; "95 Corfe ... Twelve [24] glees ... . Two books. 1791. - A third set of twelve glees ... ... . 3 vols. in 1, oblong folio, pretty vignette by Bromley on title-page of the first book, and list of subscribers ... ."; "54 Corfe. ... . Twelve glees ... . Publish'd Octr. 1st. 1791. Oblong folio, pretty vignette on title engraved by W. Bromley ... . ... . [Added in ink]: From Messrs. Ellis' catalogue - no. 297 of Rare old music."

Copy-specific note
