Note

This song is printed on one side of a leaf of paper, the other side being blank; perhaps extracted from a printed collection of music.

Note

For solo voice and continuo; includes figured bass, unrealized.

Note

A certain James Corfe was baptized at Salisbury Cathedral on 26th February, 1713 (new style); he is likely to have been identical with James Corfe, apprentice of Edward Thompson, organist of Salisbury Cathedral, during the period 1729-1730. A certain James Corfe is recorded in the Westminster Rate Books as residing in Bentinck Street [now Livonia Street, Soho] between 1743 and 1746.

Language

Sung English words, the words adapted from 'The cup' by John Oldham; text begins: Fill me a bowl a mighty bowl.

Provenance

On upper endleaves, in ink, a list of the contents of this bound collection, together with brief biographical notes, in the hand of Edward Charles Corfe.

Provenance

On verso of 3rd upper endleaf, the signature: "E. C. Corfe. Truro.", together with a cutting from a sale catalogue pasted onto the upper l.h. corner of this endleaf. Printed on this cutting are catalogue records describing the first group of works in this bound collection; at auction, these works were given the lot numbers: 2283-2286 (the 3rd item has the lot number 2085 but this may be a printing error and should, perhaps, be 2285). The present work was up for sale as one of "two sheet songs, with music, viz.: Luckless love, and The mighty bowl", the two songs having the lot number: 2286. Above the cutting, in ink and in E. C. Corfe's hand, is the inscription: "Catalogue IX. Part 3. 1907. Ellis. 29 New Bond Street. W."

Provenance

Accompanied by a letter, dated 9th December 1982, and an inventory (2 leaves) sent to Suzanne Eward from the firm of Travis & Emery, Cecil Court, London; at head of the inventory: "A collection of music by members of the Corfe family of Salisbury, from the Library of Canon E.T. [sic] Corfe, Precentor of Truro, removed from Corfe House, Bath".

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century, reprinted 2019) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”

Binding

19th-century

Copy-specific note

In ink, in top r.h. corner: 158 ('15' appears to have been written either at a different time from '8', or with a different pen).

Copy-specific note

One of a collection of music manuscripts and prints bound together; most of the pieces in this collection were either composed or arranged by members of the Corfe family; vertical measurement of this bound collection: 34 cm.
