Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (20th century) with design based on the Dean and Chapter seal, and inscription “Sarvm Cathedral Library.”

Provenance

Part of the Gillingham Parochial Library, bequeathed to the vicar and feoffees of the parish lands of Gillingham, Dorset by Thomas Freke (d. 1718?), and placed on permanent loan in Salisbury Cathedral Library 25 November 1992. Volume 1 has "M.1" inscribed on upper flyleaf, and spine label with "141". Volume 2 has "M.2" inscribed on upper flyleaf, and spine label with "10[...]". Volume 4 has "M.4" inscribed on upper flyleaf, and illegible spine labels. Volume 6 has "L.9" inscribed on upper flyleaf and illegible spine labels. Gillingham references (v.1) M1/-/141; (v.2) M2/-/107; (v.4) M3/-/?102; (v.6) L9/-/69.

Binding

All volumes: 18th-century sprinkled and plain brown calf over rope-fibre boards; blind fillets and rolls forming three concentric rectangular frames on boards, with blind stamps at outer corners of middle frame; raised bands; paper spine labels with title; gilt roll around board edges; text block edges sprinkled red.
