David G. Selwyn, Edmund Geste and his books (London, 2017), *C12

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Provenance

David Selwyn suggests that this volume may have belonged to Edmund Geste (Bishop of Salisbury 1571-1577), who may have acquired it secondhand, but acknowledges that there is "no positive (and some negative) evidence of Geste's ownership." It is not known when the volume came to Salisbury, but it appears in the 1880 catalogue.

Binding

20th-century white cloth over boards; blind fillets on spine; spine label with "Acta Concilii Constantien"; "Hagenov. 1500" in gilt at foot of spine. Inscription on upper pastedown in hand of Christopher Wordsworth "Rebound Aug. 1919". Faint fore-edge title: "Acta".

Copy-specific note

Inscription at foot of leaf A2r in 16th-century hand (upside down in relation to the printed text): This byll mad the xvi dai of august In this thyrd yere & rayne of our Lorde & Lady phillip & mary By the grace of god" [i.e. 1555 or (more likely) 1556].

Copy-specific note

Manuscript marginal annotations in ink in another 16th-century hand (possibly two hands) throughout volume (in Latin), but mostly on folios a3r-c3r; Latin and English annotations in ink in a later hand (17th-/18th-century) sporadically throughout volume; dates in English in pencil and ink added in the margins throughout the volume in a 20th-century hand (by Christopher Wordsworth?); much underlining of text in ink throughout volume.

Copy-specific note

Manuscript notes on upper endleaf by Christopher Wordsworth, giving details of the the sessions and dates of the Acta Constantiensis Concilij, imprint, etc.
