Physical description

5 v. ; 35 cm (fol.)

Note

This record describes all editions published by Estienne in 1572, including Adams S1790 and Adams S1791.

Note

At least three editions of this work exist: 'I have also personally examined copies of at least two other states of the Thesaurus, which, I believe, were issued later. One of these bears no date on the title, and instead of the words "Excudebat [etc]" beneath the device, reads "Henr. Stephani Oliva.". There are other, more substantial differences, some of which are pointed out by Renouard. The other variant copy, although dated 1572 and with the statement "Excudebat ..." beneath the device, exhibits striking differences in the setting of the title- page as well as other leaves. This set is furthermore printed on poorer, thinner paper, and is considerably shorter, a circumstance which, in this case, is clearly not entirely attributable to the binder's knife. A thorough examination and comparison of different sets of the Thesaurus would be a worthwhile scholarly project.'--Schreiber, Fred. The Estiennes: an annotated catalogue of 300 highlights of their various presses (1982), no. 181.

Note

One edition (title-page described in Adams S1790) is printed on good quality paper, the untrimmed page being is more than 36 cm tall, and has the imprint: "Anno M. D. LXXII, excudebat Henr. Stephanus. Cum priuilegio Cæs. Maiestatis, et Christianiss. Galliarum Regis."; the first "V" of "THESAVRVS" aligns with the "I" of "LINGVAE", and the second "V of "THESAVRVS" aligns with "AE" of "LINGVAE", the "p" of "paternae" aligns with the "l" of "vocabula", and in the imprint, "IS" in "CHRISTIANISS." aligns with "IS" of "REGIS". A variant of this edition has "GENEVAE," printed (stamped?) after "Stephanus." in the imprint; the title-leaf may or may not be a cancel.

Note

Another edition (title-page described in Adams S1790) is printed on thinner paper, the untrimmed page being less than 36 cm tall, and has the imprint: "Anno M. D. LXXII, excudebat Henr. Stephanus. Cum priuilegio Cæs. Maiestatis, et Christianiss. Galliarum Regis."; the point of the first "V" of "THESAVRVS" aligns with the first leg of the "N" of "LINGVAE", and the point of the second "V" of "THESAVRVS" aligns with the space between the "AE" of "LINGVAE" and the comma following it, the "p" of "paternae" aligns with the "l" of "vocabula", and in the imprint, "IS" in "CHRISTIANISS." aligns with "IS" of "REGIS".

Note

A third edition (title-page described in Adams S1791) is printed on paper giving a page about 34 cm tall and has the imprint: "Henr. Stephani oliua. Cum priuilegio Cæs. Maiestatis, et Christianiss. Galliarum Regis."; the point of the first "V" of "THESAVRVS" aligns with the first leg of the "N" of "LINGVAE", and the point of the second "V" of "THESAVRVS" aligns with the space between the "AE" of "LINGVAE", the "p" of "paternae" lines up with the space between the "l" and the "a" in "vocabula"; in the imprint, the "IS" in "CHRISTIANISS." is directly above the "G" in "REGIS".

Note

Pagination and signatures vary, the collation is complex, and several leaves have been reprinted -- see Renouard, Annales de l'imprimerie des Estienne, p. 138.

Note

Register as given in Adams is only to be considered indicative, copies may conform to either, or be a combination of the two. The final leaf of the index in volume 5 bears a "registrum ..." for all five volumes.

Note

Only volume 1 has a title-leaf as such. Volumes 1-4 have a half-title reading "Thesauri linguae Graecae ab Henr. Stephano constructi. Tomus I [-IV]". Volume 5 has a half-title reading "Appendix libellorum ad Thesaurum Graecae linguae pertinentium".

Note

Loci quidam de quorum emendatione" volume 5, index, columns 209-212.
