Inscription on upper endleaf, in ink in 17th-century hand: "Sam: ffosters of Redgrave in Suffolk left with me Will. Halls at the Jackanapes on Horseback in the strand by the maypole to be sent to Dr Watson upon his finding five pounds as Agreed, to the sayd Will. for the use of ye said Samuel".

19th-century; quarter bound in brown calf; boards covered with parchment; spine with five raised bands, blind stamps, and gilt fillets; "Athenæi Dipnosoph" and "Basil 1535" in gilt on spine; text block edges stained yellow; marbled endleaves.
