Provenance

Probably owned by Edmund Guest: his distinctive shelfmark is written in ink on the fore-ege: M36[?]. Not listed in David G. Selwyn, Edmund Geste and his books (London, 2017).

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Binding

Bound in Cambridge in the first decade of the 16th-century by the so-called "Lattice Binder", whose workshop was active ca 1485-1511. Calf over wooden boards; the calf has been coated with a pink pigment, which was a distinctive habit of Cambridge binders in the late 15th- and early 16th-centuries. Sewn on four supports. Boards are decorated with blind fillets and small stamps (not a roll) forming rectangular frame on boards, and the the central panel is filled with diaper framework, "pineapple" or "lattice" stamps, and small floral stamps. Spine has four raised bands, and later gilt horizontal fillets; "Bassar: A Polo: Platon:" is stamped in gilt on spine. Parchment manuscript waste is used as pastedowns (now free). There are remains of two clasps at fore-edge. The book was rebacked, and repaired with new endleaves (20th- century).

Copy-specific note

Manuscript marginal annotations in at least two late15th-/early 16th-century hands, in ink. The positioning of the annotations in the gutter margin indicate that they pre-date the existing binding.

Copy-specific note

Bound with: Cardinal Bēssariōn, In calumniatorem Platonis libri quatuor (Venice, 1503).

Copy-specific note

Loose inside: a manuscript note about the binding, citing E.G. Duff. Now in Loose Inserts Box.
