Provenance

Identified by David Selwyn as having belonged to Edmund Guest (1514?-1577); pressmark C28 at head of fore-edge.

Provenance

Salisbury Cathedral Library bookplate (19th century) with 13th-century Dean and Chapter seal and inscription “Sarum Cathedral Library.”

Binding

16th-century dark brown calf over paper boards; sewn on four supports; repaired and given new endleaves (20th century); blind fillets and rolls forming rectangular frame on boards (roll identified by Selwyn as Oldham HM.h(29)); spine with four raised bands and blind fillets; title in ink on fore-edge; pressmark C28 in ink at head of fore-edge; evidence of two ties at fore-edge of boards; parchment manuscript waste used as pastedowns, now free (identified by Selwyn as two leaves of a 12th-century English manuscript of pseudo-Jerome, Epistolae ad Paulum et Eustachium). Selwyn notes that the binding has been tentatively attributed to Nicholas Spierinck by David Pearson.

Copy-specific note

A few marginal annotations (mostly underlinings and marginal lines); manuscript notes in Guest's hand, upside down in relation to text, on recto and verso of lower endleaf.
