Description
A single sheet with, on one side, a copy of a Proxy of Francis Horton, 13 Oct 1696, and, on the other side, a copy of a Dispensation given by William III to Peter Allix, 25 Dec 1697.The purpose of the copies and the date on which they were made is unknown.
The copy Proxy, in Latin, of Francis Horton, Canon Residentiary (1674-1699) and sometime locum tenens for the Dean, was for the Dean to act on Horton's behalf in Chapter. He says he is hindered by difficult and urgent business and unable to attend Chapter. The original was sealed, and witnessed by Bohun Fox (Vicar of Melksham, 1697-1750), Thomas Horton and Thomas Naish (possibly Thomas Naish, c 1668-1755, Subdean from 1694). Dated from Melksham.
The copy Dispensation, in English, was given by William III to Peter (or Pierre) Allix (1641-1717; Treasurer, 1690-1717) exempting him from his duties as a Canon Residentiary because he is "engaged in a great & usefull Work relating to the History & Councills of the Christian Church, which is now almost ready for the Press, which necessarily requires his Presence here". Dated from "Our Court at Kensington".
Peter (or Pierre) Allix was the author of many theological books, an advocate of religous toleration and a celebrated Huguenot preacher. He was born in Alencon and fled to England following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.
