Description
The copy Dispensation, in English, was given by William III to Peter (or Pierre) Allix (1641-1717; Treasurer, 1690-1717) exempting him from his duties as a Canon Residentiary because he is "engaged in a great & usefull Work relating to the History & Councills of the Christian Church, which is now almost ready for the Press, which necessarily requires his Presence here" . Dated from "Our Court at Kensington", signed "By his Majesties Command" by James Vernon, sometime Secretary of State, and by William III.
At the foor of the page: "Memorandum to write to Dr Allix".
Peter (or Pierre) Allix was the author of many theological books, an advocate of religous toleration and a celebrated Huguenot preacher. He was born in Alencon and fled to England following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.
