Description
Letter to "The Rev'd Mr Skinner, Sarum" from a Mrs T N Silver of Winton.
"I presume you will excuse the Liberty I take for requesting a favour - it being to Oblige Mrs [illegible] sister of Mr Gibson[.] Mrs Gibson is dead & particularly desired that the remains of Mr G might be removed from Sarum to Waltham to be laid in the Vault there[.] Whether there will be any difficulty in getting leave to take the Body up I'm not a judge[.] If there is you will be so kind as to give me a Line Or else I shall be at Sarum Tuesday to see it done with your kind assistance to point out the spot[.] The Hearse will be at Sarum Wednesday with a [shell?] to inclose the Cofffin and take it to Waltham Thursday to be interred with Mrs Gibson".
Below the signature in a different contemporary hand: " I cannot read the material part of Mrs Silvers Letter but imagine Mr G Body is to be removed to Waltham - Mrs Humes Remains were brought here after the late Bishops Decease. I apprehend a faculty is necessary. [Illegible signature].
(The monument to Bishop John Hume in the south transept of the Cathedral records that "Near this place are deposited the remains of John Hume . . . .who was buried July the 6th 1782 . . . Also of Ann Hume His Lordship's first wife who died without issue in 1757").
