Description

Letter signed "N Ogle" from "Kirkley near N.C.", addressed to "Jos Elderton Esq, Endless Street, Salisbury, 9 August 1787. Postmark "13 AU 87". "N Ogle" is presumably Newton Ogle (1726-1804) of Kirkley Hall, sometime Prebendary of Durham Cathedral, and Dean of Winchester (1769-1804). In 1757 he married Susanna, daughter of John Thomas, Bishop of Salisbury (1757-1761) and of Winchester (1761-1781). Joseph Elderton was the Diocesan Registrar of Salisbury. "Your letter has travelled about after me & by that means I am thus long in answering it. I shall with great readiness contribute to the improvements meditated by the Bishop which, tho' I have not been shown, are I dare say very proper. When I am on the spot which I hope soon to be I shall know what is to be done & proportion my subscription accordingly. However they shall not have less from me than 25 Guineas which I believe is about the proportion of a Canon or a Dean". After the signature: "I go to Durham, to reside in a few days" and "I quite approve the resolution of keeping clear of the Fabric Fund & beg my Compliments to all my Brethren". With a summary by Penelope Rundle, Archive Volunteer, late 2010s.
