Description

Letter from John Douglas, as Bishop-elect of Salisbury and signed "J Sarum El", from Windsor Castle, 30 July 1791 to "Mr Elderton" (Joseph Elderton, Diocesan Registrar). John Douglas was Dean of Windsor from 1788 and Bishop of Salisbury, 1791-1807. "I beg leave to acquaint you, that, in consequence of what the Dean apprized me of about the State of the Church, I intend to be inthroned by Proxy; & as soon as my Confirmation is over, Notice shall be given you, that you may proceed to the above Ceremony, which I hope will give little trouble. I shall be obliged to you, if you will be so good as to let me know the Mode of Reception, which, I understand, is attended with many formalities". The Dean at the time was John Ekins (1731-1809, Dean 1786-1808). With a smmary by Penelope Rundle, Archive Volunteer, late 2010s.
