Description

Letter addressed to William Boucher, "Hithe near Southampton, signed "Tho Wilkie", "Salisbury Mar 16. 1806". "in consequence of my Bark Mill having been considerably damaged by fire a week ago; I feel very desirous of being permitted to use a Water Mill in future: I presume the permission of the Bishop of Salisbury must necessarily be obtained before I can think of erecting a Water Wheel in Bugmore; & on that account it is, that I solicit your good Offices with his Lordship". "such a wheel as is necessary will not have any effect to injure the water Meadows by directing the regular course of the Water; or in any other way to impede its current: and by using a Water Mill , instead of a Horse, I shall have no further occasion to dry the Bark on a kiln . . . whereby there will not be any risk to the City from a Fire happening". "I hope shortly to have the pleasure of seeing you in Salisbury, with you heath perfectly re-established". With a summary by Penelope Rundle, Archive Volunteer, late 2010s.
