Description

Notebook, 220mm x 285mm, of some 65 leaves, bound in brown parchment or leather. Closure tapes stitched through the cover; three out of an original four survive. Heading on the cover: "Accounts for the Deane & Chapter of Sarum"; another title on the spine, illegibile except for "Crowne" and perhaps the numerals "4" and "9". The date range "23 April 1640 to 3 May 1641" is written on the first leaf, in the later hand of Christopher Wordsworth (Librarian, 1913-1937). The notebook does not contain the accounts suggested by the title. A previous catalogue entry says that it "appears to be an act book for a court sitting in St Paul's Cathedral, London". It contains a series of references and memoranda, lists of names and other entries, perhaps relating to legal proceedings of some kind, but the context and substance are unclear. There is at least one reference to "S Pauls' London" (on the 30th leaf). Only about 38 leaves have been used.
