Description

"The humble petition of John Bartlett" addressed to the Dean (John Bowle, 1620-1630) and Chapter. The Wiltshire County Record Office identified John Bartlett as "organist and vicar choral" (see Diocese of Salisbury: Guide to the Records of the Bishop, the Archdeacons of Salisbury and Wiltshire, and other Archidiaconal and Peculiar Jursidictions, compiled by Pamela Stewart (Wiltshire County Council, 1973), p.114) John Bartlett tells the Dean and Chapter that he "submitted himself unto your worships in all things hopeing that you will Deale with him as a pooreman wanting comfort and meanes And relying onely upon your mercies". The substance of his petition is that he should be given "the gratulation your worships promised . . . at the Leaveing of his place". He also refers to: - "the money for the Choristers rents due at Midsommer which is fourty five shillings and five pence"; - "parte of the Commons money due at Easter and Midsommer from Mr Doctor Barnestone three shillings"; - "thirty shillings due to him for the Choristers at his Lord and Masters funerall"; and - "Satisfaction for the goods left in the house and alsoe for the Sixt Surplesses and fouer gownes". He further seeks help "to recover of the Vicars the Avverages of five pounds per Annum out of the Parsonage of Hanney due to him for the time of his keeping of the Choristers[.] And also seaven pence a feast for sixteene feast[s] per Annum which the Vicars hath obtayned from him thirteene yeares". He ends "he would very willingly wash his hands of hauinge any thinge to Doe with the Vicars who as he knoweth hath beene the Chiefest instrument of this his utter undoinge". Below the petition, in a different hand, is a response signed by: John Bowle, Dean Giles Thornborough, Prebendary (1593-1637) and Subdean John Barnston, Prebendary (1601-1645), sometime locum tenens for the Dean Henry Seward, Prebendary (1612-1640) and Succentor John Lee, Prebendary (1616-1624) and Treasurer (1624-1634). At the foot of the page John Bartlett writes to "Acknowledge the mercy of the Dean and Chapter unto me". John Bartlett's receipt, signed by him with two witnesses, is on a separate, larger sheet, in a hand which is difficult to decipher, dated [April?] 1623.
