Description
"To the Right Worshipfull the Deane & Chapter of the Close of Sarum The humble petition of Edmund Tucker Organist".
Tucker says that he has "26 yeares been a servant" and has "at no time as yet troubled your worships for any thinge" but "now time being hard & . . . meanes small" he does "most humbly intreate your worships to graunt unto him this viccars place that is now voyd or the next that shall fall and he will God willing performe it to your good content". If this is granted, "I will never trouble you for any thinge for longe as I live".
Tucker observes that "by that meanes Mr Holmes may have the Organist place"; he lists the rates of renuneration for "an Alterists place" and other positions and says, "I heare Mr [Clun] hath made sute in regards of his former paines but I know he is not fitt for hit because his sight faileth him and that hee cannot see to make a pen, nor make a songe true if it bee false".
On the back of the document, in what is probably Pamela Stwart's hand: "D & C Letters & Petitions See Shuter's Acts, p.5". Reference is indeed made to Edward Tucker on page 5 of the Chapter Act Book, 1622-1642 (CH/1/17), formerly known as Shuter's Memoriall, where the surrounding entries are dated March 1623.
A small hole in the paper has been patched.
