Description
A closely-written document mostly in Latin concerning a case in the Consistory Court of Salisbury against a Joseph Kelsey who was accused of detaining goods and chattels belonging to George Jolliffe, deceased. Kelsey was accused by Maria Joliffe (née Quintin), Grace Joliffe (née Snelger) and Elizabeth Joliffe (née Symons), administrators of the late George Joliffe's estate
The document is in the form of a "prohibition" from Charles II to Robert Woodward, later Dean of Salisbury but at the time Archdeacon of Wilts and the principal officer of the Consistory Court. Joseph Kelsey has appealed to the king's court, claiming that he should not be tried by an ecclesiastical court, so the Consistory Court should not be proceeding against him.
The goods and chattels allegedly detained by Joseph Kelsey are listed, in English, in the body of the Latin document. The English is difficult to decipher but seems to include, for example, "one dozen and halfe of [illegible], fourteene flaggons woodden chamber pottes five [?pewter] candleholders . . . five . . .potte kettles and half pottes & five skillettes".
There is no evidence of a seal having been impressed or attached, so the document may be a copy.
