Description

Items 142-151: the eighth "sub-bundle". 142. Undated, unsigned note mainly about title to the Forest of Buckholt and about grazing and hunting rights therein. It quotes, in Latin, an original charter of Henry I confiirming a grant to "the Church of Sarum" but then says, "The antient and royal forest of Buckholt was granted away by James 1st. This is now in the possession of C Baring Wall Esq. I have a copy or abstract of the grant". Charles Baring Wall (1795-1853) of Norman Court, on the borders of Wiltshire and Hampshire, was at various times MP for Guildford, Wareham, Weymouth and Salisbury. With a cover sheet addressed to Archdeacon William Macdonald, wiith a fragment of an impressed seal in red wax. 143. 17 Sep 1841. Letter from Frances Attwood about adding "a young life to the Existing Lives" to the lease of an unidentified property; also mentioning "the Alvington Renewal". 144. 15 Jun, no year. Letter from Edward Caswall: "Many thanks for your kind note and the draft which accompanied it. I am just now busy in furnishing my house which renders such little notes very acceptable every now and then". Edward Caswall was Curate of St Lawrence, Stratford-sub-Castle, 1840-1847, and a poet, author on religious subjects and writer and translator of hymns, including "See Amid the Winter's Snow". In 1847 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church under the influence of John Henry Newman, who later delegated to him some responsibility for the foundation of the Oratory School, which opened in 1859. 145. Feb 1836. Letter to Archdeacon William Macdonald (29 Feb) from John North, Devizes, with a copy of a letter (25 Feb) from John Williams, Gray's Inn, London, both about "the renewals of the Uffcot Estate". 146. 18 Apr 1836. Letter to Archdeacon William Macdonald from Edward Halsey, the Vicarage, Hungerford, thanking him for his support. "I have not seen the house, but from what I have heard of it, I imagine it will afford sufficient accommodation for my family". He asks if he needs to "apply to the other members of the chapter". Fragment of a seal impressed in red wax. 147. 29 Jun 1836. Letter to Archdeacon William Macdonald from J L Alford, sending a copy of a letter dated 27 Jun from "the Auditor of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral" and of a resolution referred to in that letter. The resolution is that "a meeting of two or more memebers of each Chapter be holden in London at an early and convenient time for the purpose of taking into consideration the Reports of the Church Commissioners . . . and any Bills which may be presented to Parliament founded on the same". Also a copy of a letter dated 25 Jun from Henry P Bird, 56 Lincoln's Inn Fields, saying the the executors of "Bowle's Estate" decline to renew "the Lease of the Estate at Idmiston upon the terms mentioned". Rectangular seal impressed in red wax with a motif including the initials "JLA". 148. 1 Dec 1836. Letter from Francis Attwood: "If I am to attend at Melksham as the authorised Agent of the Dean and Chapter I must be firnished with a power of Attorney". 149. 16 May 1836. Letter to Archdeacon William Macdonald addressed from London with illegible signature. "We have now the pleasure to enclose a Power of Attorney for receipt of the future dividends on £4,047 Consols". 150. 7 Apr 1836. Letter to Archdeacon William Macdonald from Francis Attwood about a negotiation with "Mr Hayward . . . I cannot prevail on him to advance beyond £1100". 151. Dec 1836. "Received of Revd Archdeacon Macdonld the sum of twelve pounds six shillings" - the "balance of Stipend as Curate of Stratford due Christmas 1836". Signed by Arthur Stonhouse. "Stratford" is presumably Stratford-sub-Castle.
