Description
Items 88-99: a group of loose documents interspersed between "sub-bundle" 3 and "sub-bundle" 4.
These are all brief business letters addressed to William Macdonald by J L Alford, the Chapter Clerk. Some enclosures and accompanying material are missing. The context of the letters is often not clear, but there are a number of references to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and payments due thereto, to the Chapter Account and the Prebendal Fund, and to financial matters relating to specific parishes (including Kenton, Pitton & Farley, Whitchurch).
Alford's letter dated 14 May 1851 (item 98) includes the following: "The Chapter Clerk of Durham has sent me the accompanying Petition [missing] . . . It has been read by the Precentor who has also seen Lord Carlisle's Bill and he authorises me to say that he will concur in a Petition if the Chapter should determine to move in the Matter". What "the Matter" of the Petition was is not evident.
Six of the letters bear both fragments of small round seals in red wax and a stamped postmark. Three of the letters have "Penny Red" postage stamps affixed.
