Description

Petition addressed to "the Chapiter of the Cathedral Church of Our Lady within the Close at New Sarum" and signed "Yr most assured friend" by Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke and 1st Earl of Montgomery (1584-1650): "Whereas I am given to understand that one Thomas Lawes hath served in the Church as a Layman for this 22 yeares past and there is now said a Vicars place therein, into which he desireth to be admitted . . . My earnest request is that you will accept and admit the said Thomas Lawes into the said place of Vicar in the said Church". The "said Church" is presumably Salisbury Cathedral; Thomas Lawes was born 1576, died 1640.
