Description
Letter from John Bowle (Dean, 1620-1630) "To the worshipful my very loving friends Mr Dr Barmstone and the rest of the Chapter". John Barnston was a Canon Residentiary (c1614-1645) who acted as locum tenens for the Dean.
The letter concerns a dispute, apparently between the Dean and the Chapter themselves, relating to "the rent of Meere".
The Dean encourages Chapter to pursue the dispute in Chancery: "my evidences being all gone out of the muniment house, whereof the Chapter had the custody, I knowe that you must begin your suit in chancery where I hope it shall be ended . . . It will answer directly and you shall have a charitable proceeding". He outlines the basis of the dispute: "I wonder you should write that I have received the rent of Meere when you know I protested the contrary. The rent is in the tenants hands".
In a note added to the side of the letter the Dean says, "If you sue I praye begin presently, that I may have an end. I have not answered your reasons, because I see it bootes not, and I find I have been to[o] open allready". A further sentence is inked over and illegible.
